Crop

Corn

Location

Illinois, USA

Field Size

110 acres

Damaged Area

28 acres

This corn field had two different corn hybrids of 12 rows each. The farm had a wind event early in the season and satellite imagery detected the difference between how the two hybrids tolerated the wind.

The day following the wind event, a Scouting Map showed streaking in the field. The green areas in the map showed where the corn was standing, and the red areas displayed where the corn laid down and goosenecked.

The Variation Map showed where the wind caused the underside of the leaves to be visible, changing the color and architecture of the plants. The visible separation between hybrids largely disappears as a result.

Knowing which hybrid performs better against certain weather events is critical information to have to make better-informed decisions.

Economic Impact

Corn Price: $3.69
Red area showed yields of 204 bu/ac.
204 x 3.69 = $752.76/ac

Green areas showed yields of 232 bu/ac.
232 x 3.69 = $856.08/ac

232-bushel corn reduced to 204 bushels resulted in a 13% yield impact.
28 bushel difference x $3.69 = a difference of $103.32 per acre.

Number of acres impacted: 21.69
$103.32 x 21.69 acres = $2241.01 TOTAL
